What Is a Double Doodle? Honey, Preach & Indiana Explained

What Is a Double Doodle? A Simple Guide Using Our Own Dogs

One of the questions we get all the time is:

“What exactly is a Double Doodle?”

It sounds complicated at first, but it is actually pretty simple once you see how the family tree works.

A Double Doodle is a doodle that brings together both Goldendoodle and Labradoodle influence. That means there is typically a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, and Poodle in the background.

For our program, this matters because our dogs are not just random doodles. Each one brings something specific to the table, and their backgrounds help explain why their puppies are considered multigen Double Doodles.

What Is a Double Doodle?
explaining that a Double Doodle combines Goldendoodle and Labradoodle influence, using Honey, Preach, and Indiana as examples from Rock Creek Doodles.

The Simple Version

  • A Goldendoodle comes from Golden Retriever and Poodle lines.

  • A Labradoodle comes from Labrador Retriever and Poodle lines.

  • A Double Doodle combines those doodle lines together.

  • So instead of being only Golden Retriever and Poodle, or only Labrador Retriever and Poodle, a Double Doodle brings together all three influences:

  • Golden Retriever + Labrador Retriever + Poodle

That is the simple way to understand it.

The Poodle influence often helps with coat traits, while the retriever influence can bring that friendly, family-loving personality people love in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers.

Meet the Dogs Behind Our Program

The best way to explain our puppies is to introduce the actual dogs behind them.

In our program, the main dogs we are talking about are:

Honey, Indiana, and Preach

Honey and Indiana are our F1B Goldendoodle girls. Preach is our Double Doodle / multigen doodle male.

Together, their pairings help produce puppies that are best described as multigen Double Doodles.

Honey: Our F1B Goldendoodle Girl

Honey is one of our F1B Goldendoodle girls.

An F1B Goldendoodle is typically about:

75% Poodle25% Golden Retriever

That means Honey brings a strong Poodle influence while still being part of the Goldendoodle family tree.

Honey has that classic cream/apricot Goldendoodle look, and her background helps bring Poodle coat influence into our program.

Indiana: Our Parti-Line F1B Goldendoodle Girl

Indiana is also an F1B Goldendoodle girl.

Like Honey, she is typically understood as about:

75% Poodle25% Golden Retriever

The difference is that Indiana has a beautiful black-and-white parti look.

One thing that is important to understand is that parti describes her color pattern, not her generation. She is still an F1B Goldendoodle. Her parti coloring simply gives her that distinct black-and-white appearance.

Indiana brings Goldendoodle background, Poodle influence, and her unique parti line into our program.

Preach: Our Double Doodle / Multigen Doodle Male

Preach is what helps make the Double Doodle explanation really come together.

Preach is not just a Goldendoodle, and he is not just a Labradoodle. His DNA snapshot shows a blend of:

About 48% Labrador Retriever, About 45% Poodle, About 7% Golden Retriever

That means Preach brings Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Golden Retriever influence into the program.

This is why we describe him as a Double Doodle / multigen doodle. He already carries more than one doodle line behind him.

Why Their Puppies Are Multigen Double Doodles

Now this is where it gets easier to understand.

Honey is an F1B Goldendoodle. Indiana is an F1B Goldendoodle. Preach is a Double Doodle / multigen doodle.

So when we pair:

Honey × Preach

or

Indiana × Preach

the puppies are not first-generation doodles. Both sides already have doodle lineage behind them.

That is why their puppies are considered:

Multigen Double Doodles

“Multigen” simply means the doodle lineage continues beyond a first-generation cross.

So instead of saying, “This is a first-generation puppy from two purebred parents,” we are saying, “This puppy comes from parent dogs who already have doodle generations and mixed retriever/Poodle ancestry behind them.”

What Each Dog Brings to the Table

Each parent contributes something important.

Honey brings Goldendoodle background with strong Poodle influence. She contributes that F1B Goldendoodle family tree and a cream/apricot classic Goldendoodle look.

Indiana also brings an F1B Goldendoodle background with strong Poodle influence, along with her beautiful black-and-white parti pattern.

Preach brings the Double Doodle side. His background includes Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and Poodle influence, which adds more retriever-family background into the puppies.

Together, these pairings give us puppies with doodle coat influence, retriever-family personality traits, and a more layered family tree than a first-generation doodle.

Quick Definitions

Here is the easiest way to understand the terms:

F1 means a first-generation cross. For example, a Golden Retriever bred to a Poodle creates an F1 Goldendoodle.

F1B means an F1 doodle was bred back to a Poodle. This usually creates more Poodle influence in the family tree.

Double Doodle means a doodle that combines Goldendoodle and Labradoodle influence.

Multigen Double Doodle means the puppy comes from dogs that already have doodle lineage behind them, and that lineage includes the Double Doodle blend.

The easiest way to remember it is this:

Generation tells the family tree. DNA tells the traits.

Final Thoughts

A Double Doodle is not as confusing as it sounds.

The simple explanation is this:

A Goldendoodle blends Golden Retriever and Poodle. A Labradoodle blends Labrador Retriever and Poodle. A Double Doodle brings those doodle lines together.

In our program, Honey and Indiana bring the F1B Goldendoodle side, while Preach brings the Double Doodle / multigen side. That is why their puppies are described as multigen Double Doodles.

We love being able to explain this with our actual dogs because it helps families see the real story behind the puppies — not just a label, but the family tree, the DNA background, and what each parent contributes.

At the end of the day, every puppy is still unique. Generations and DNA help explain the background, but each puppy will have their own personality, coat, look, and temperament as they grow.
